When the conditions are very cold and the fishes metabolism slows down to almost zero the gently gently approach will always score. Finer hooklengths, smaller hooks and baits are the order of the day. Bread punch will always take a few fish when the more conventional baits fail to score.

Be more patient than usual. I am probably the least patient of anglers but when the going is tough I get my head down and make them have it. Under winter conditions I have sat for up to 3 hours without a bite and then bingo for the last two hours a bit e every chuck.

Advice to all who put their gear away in winter. Get out and give it a go. You could well be surprised at what you catch.
