Water Reports

I am told while I was out of the country the weather was very warm and with little rain. I guess I must be jinxed as on my return the temperatures plummeted the rain returned with a vengeance. Several of my angling mates reported that the tench had awakened from their winter slumber and individuals reported catches in excess of 25 fish in one outing. Tench are still being landed but in smaller numbers and from slighlty deeper water.

Last Sunday I fished on the Woodford above Ballinamore. It was 2ft up and going through like an express train. I decided to fish a stick float carrying 5bb shot and my hook bait was two maggots on a size 16 B500 Colmic. Every second cast I introduced a ball of stiff groundbait about the size of a small orange loaded with maggots. I landed hybrids up to 1lb plus a good stamp of roach. In 3 hours I had close on 30lbs. Very enjoyable under the present circumstances.

I am told this week the weather will improve and get a little warmer. The fish are now shoaling up so watch for them in shallower bays and the smaller streams where they go to spawn and clean off. Please handle with care as the fish need time to recover and I suggest you return them as you catch. For now leave your keep net in it’s bag.
